27 April 1978 – Leaders of the
combined Khalq and Parcham leftist parties launched a coup. President
Daoud Khan and his supporters were killed. The Democratic republic of
Afghanistan DRA was set up. The Saur revolution was also Islamic.
5 Dec 1978 – Taraki went to Moscow
and signed with Leonid Brezhnev a treaty of friendship and
cooperation with the Soviet Union. Soviet military advisers played a
role in directing DRA military units in their war against the rebels
in the countryside.
24 Dec 1979 – Soviet forces entered

15 Feb 1989 – General Boris V Gromov
was commander of Soviet forces in Afghanistan. He walked into
Uzbekistan on 15 Feb 1989. The Soviets had lost 15,000 lives and
